During the "two sessions" (the sessions of the NPC and the CPPCC National Committee) to be held in 2026, Liu Yonghao, a member of the CPPCC National Committee and chairman of the board of directors of New Hope Group, said in an interview with China.org.cn: "To transform agriculture into a truly modern major industry, we need not just 'single breakthroughs', but the systemic integration and synergy of factors such as technology, eco-friendliness, quality, and branding."
From 1993 to the present, Liu Yonghao has served as a member of the CPPCC National Committee for six terms and as a deputy to the National People's Congress (NPC). In total, he has submitted 214 proposals and recommendations.
This year marks the first year of the 15th Five-Year Plan. According to him, only by addressing seed production development issues through technological innovation and improving logistics and distribution efficiency can technology truly serve agricultural production and help agriculture move away from the traditional "weather-dependent" model.
Speaking about "green" agriculture, he believes that "green" means long-term competitiveness. "Agricultural development must consistently prioritize ecology, promote improved varieties suited to local conditions, develop circular farming models, promote the recycling of waste as a resource, and integrate low-carbon standards into locally tailored production to truly transform environmental advantages into a market premium and achieve both environmental and economic benefits," Liu Yonghao explained.
He also believes that agricultural development should establish a quality control system across all stages—from production to final sales—applying a zero-tolerance approach at all stages. "Quality is not the final test, but the initial design goal. Only by strictly controlling quality can we earn consumer trust and lay a solid foundation for agricultural modernization," said Liu Yonghao.
"Branding agriculture is the 'last mile' on the road to its modernization." Liu Yonghao believes that by building on established routes to foreign markets and increasing the international influence of Chinese agricultural products, it is possible to stimulate the agricultural sector's transition from "good cultivation" to "good sales," achieving higher added value and farmer incomes.
This year marks the first year of the 15th Five-Year Plan. Liu Yonghao calls on the state to improve policies in agricultural technology, ecology, quality, and branding, engaging various market players to actively participate in this process.
