BEIJING, March 8 (Xinhua) — China calls for an immediate end to military operations in the Middle East to prevent further escalation and avoid conflict spillover, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Sunday at a press conference on the sidelines of the fourth session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) in Beijing.

This is a war that should never have happened and a war that will bring no benefit to anyone, Wang Yi said.

The issue cannot be resolved by force; military action will generate new hatred and worsen an already tense situation, he noted.

The sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of the Gulf region countries, including Iran, must be respected and will not be violated, Wang Yi said, outlining the basic principles for a proper settlement of the situation around Iran and in the Middle East.

Frequent use of force cannot prove greatness, and innocent people should not become victims of war, the diplomat said, emphasizing the importance of refraining from the abuse of force.

The peoples of the Middle East are the true masters of this region, and the countries of the region should independently resolve Middle East issues, Wang Yi said, calling for non-interference in internal affairs.

“Attempts to provoke color revolutions and change the government will not find support,” he added.

"All parties should return to the negotiating table as soon as possible, resolve differences through equal dialogue, and make efforts to ensure common security," the Chinese foreign minister said, emphasizing the importance of promoting a political settlement of pressing issues.

Wang Yi called on major powers to act in accordance with the principle of justice, follow the right path, and play a more positive role in realizing peace and development in the Middle East.

China is ready to work together with Middle East countries to implement the Global Security Initiative to bring the Middle East back to normal life for the sake of people's well-being and world peace, he said. -0-
