Jerusalem, March 6 (Xinhua) — Israeli forces are moving to the "next phase" of their campaign against Iran, intensifying attacks on the foundations of the Iranian ruling regime and its military capabilities. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of General Staff Eyal Zamir announced this in a televised address on Thursday.
After the "surprise first strike" that suppressed Iran's ballistic missile array, the military is moving on to other targets, he noted. "We have other surprise moves that I won't reveal," E. Zamir said. "We will pursue all our enemies and overtake them," he added.
The Israeli Air Force carried out 2,500 strikes, dropped over 6,000 munitions, and destroyed approximately 60 percent of Iran's ballistic missile launchers and 80 percent of its air defense systems, said E. Zamir. Israel has achieved near-total air superiority over Iran, he noted.
The joint US-Israeli operation, which began on Saturday, is being closely coordinated with senior US military officials, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Kaine and Head of Central Command Brad Cooper, Zamir said.
He said the aim of the strikes was to deprive the Iranian government of its military capabilities and push it into a "strategic isolation and weakness" it had never experienced before.
E. Zamir also reported that Israel is launching powerful attacks along the border and deep into Lebanon. Troops have been ordered to advance and occupy key positions in southern Lebanon, he stated.
