WASHINGTON, March 6 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will appoint a new Homeland Security secretary to replace Kristi Noem amid growing dissatisfaction with the department's leadership among both Democrats and Republicans.

“I am pleased to announce that the highly respected United States Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma will become the Secretary of Homeland Security, effective March 31, 2026,” Trump wrote on the Truth Social social network.

“Current Secretary of State Kristi Noem, who has served us well and achieved numerous and impressive results… is being appointed special envoy for Shield of the Americas, our new Western Hemisphere security initiative, which we will announce on Saturday in Doral, Florida,” he said, thanking Noem for her work at the Department of Homeland Security.

Shortly before this first Cabinet change of Donald Trump's second term, American media reported that the president was considering firing Noem, who had become the target of bipartisan criticism after federal law enforcement officers shot and killed two US citizens in Minneapolis. Already dissatisfied with the official, Trump was "furious" with her remarks during a recent congressional hearing and began considering firing her, NBC News reported, citing lawmakers and other informed sources.
