BEIJING, March 2 (Xinhua) — China's cumulative box office revenue since the beginning of 2026 has reached more than 10 billion yuan (about 1.44 billion U.S. dollars), according to data from Maoyan, one of the country's largest online ticketing platforms.

According to data, as of approximately 7:00 p.m. Sunday, the country's total box office revenue since the beginning of this year had exceeded 10 billion yuan.

During the reporting period, approximately 225 million tickets were sold in cinemas across the country, with the total number of film screenings exceeding 26.1 million.

As previously reported by the State Film Administration of the People's Republic of China, during the Spring Festival holiday (Chinese New Year), which ran from February 15 to 23, total box office receipts amounted to more than 5.75 billion yuan.

Maoyan also reported a noticeable change in the demographic structure of moviegoers this year: people under 25 years old accounted for 27.61 percent of all moviegoers, compared to 23.53 percent in the same period last year.

According to data, the film market's strong performance has been supported by lower ticket prices. According to Taopiaopiao, another major ticketing platform, the average movie ticket price in January-February 2026 was 42 yuan, compared to 50 yuan for the same period in 2025. The average ticket price during the Spring Festival holiday decreased by 6 percent compared to the same period last year.
