Madrid, March 2 (Xinhua) — Spain will not support US and Israeli military action against Iran and will not allow the use of Spanish bases for such purposes, Foreign Minister José Manuel Albarez and Defense Minister Margarita Robles announced on Monday.
In an interview with the media, J. M. Albarez called for respect for international law and warned that the logic of violence will only lead to further escalation.
According to the head of the Spanish Foreign Ministry, although each country makes its own foreign policy decisions, Europe's voice at the present time must be one of balance and restraint, promoting de-escalation and a return to negotiations.
J. M. Albarez emphasized that the Spanish government will not allow the use of its bases and facilities therein for any actions that are not in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.
In turn, M. Robles stated in an interview with the Spanish state broadcaster RTVE that the military bases in Moron de la Frontera and Rota in southern Spain do not provide any support to the United States and permission for their use in military operations against Iran will not be given.
As the Minister of Defense pointed out, the use of the bases must comply with international law and the existing bilateral agreement between Spain and the United States. –0–
