New Delhi, March 1 (Xinhua) — At least 21 people were killed and several others injured in an explosion at a firecracker factory in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday, a local police official confirmed by telephone on Sunday.

The blast occurred in the Kakinada district of the state. Several women were among the injured, a police officer said, adding that those who suffered burns were taken to a local hospital.

According to media reports, the accident occurred when about 35-40 workers were mixing explosives to make firecrackers.

The sound of the explosion could be heard for miles from the ill-fated plant. The blast was so powerful that many bodies were charred beyond recognition.
