Beijing, March 1 (Xinhua) — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a telephone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Sunday at the request of the Russian side.
Wang Yi, also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, said that at the initiative of China and Russia, the UN Security Council convened an emergency meeting on Saturday to discuss the current situation in Iran.
The Chinese diplomat stressed that China consistently adheres to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and opposes the use of force in international relations.
He called US and Israeli strikes on Iran unacceptable during the Iranian-American talks, adding that it is also unacceptable to openly kill the leader of a sovereign state and incite a change of government.
Wang Yi particularly emphasized that such actions violate international law and the basic norms of international relations.
Noting that the escalation has spread to the entire Persian Gulf region, the head of the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that the situation in the Middle East risks falling into a dangerous abyss and therefore causes increased concern in China.
Wang Yi outlined China's position on the situation in Iran.
First, he said, military action must cease immediately. The war must be prevented from spreading and escalating, and the situation must not spiral out of control. As the Chinese Foreign Minister emphasized, China attaches great importance to the security of the Persian Gulf countries and supports them in exercising restraint.
Secondly, Wang Yi continued, it is necessary to return to dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible. All parties must do everything possible to promote reconciliation and prevent war, and encourage all those involved in the conflict to return to the path of dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible.
Third, Wang Yi added, it is necessary to jointly oppose unilateral actions. S. Lavrov, for his part, stated that the American-Israeli strikes on Iran seriously destabilized the situation in the Middle East.
As the Russian Foreign Minister emphasized, Russia shares China's position and is prepared to strengthen coordination and communication with the Chinese side in order to send a clear signal through platforms such as the UN and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, calling for an immediate end to the war and a return to diplomatic negotiations.
