Washington, February 27 (Xinhua) — The United States has designated Iran a "state sponsor of wrongful detention," US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Friday, amid escalating tensions between the two countries.
As stated in a written statement by the US Secretary of State, “Iran has continued to brutally detain innocent Americans and citizens of other countries for decades to use this as leverage over other countries.”
“If Iran does not stop doing this, we will be forced to consider additional measures, including potential geographic restrictions on the use of U.S. passports for travel to, from, or transit through Iran,” M. Rubio noted.
"No American should travel to Iran for any reason. We reiterate our call for all Americans currently in Iran to leave immediately," the US Secretary of State emphasized.
