Almaty, February 27 /Xinhua/ — Seven people were killed in a gas explosion in the city of Shchuchinsk in the Burabay district of Kazakhstan's Akmola region, the Kazinform news agency reported on Friday morning.

The explosion reportedly occurred in a one-story cafe attached to a five-story residential building on the night of February 26-27. Five people died at the scene, and two more died in the intensive care unit.

The fire was completely extinguished. A 16-year-old girl was among the dead. A total of 26 people were injured, according to operational reports.

Thirteen people remain in hospital, six people have been released for outpatient observation, the regional health department reported.

The Health Department has quickly deployed additional medical teams. A regional task force is on the scene, and the cause of the incident is being determined.

The Akmola Region Akimat will provide all necessary assistance to the families of the deceased, as well as to the injured, the office added.
