Changchun, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) — Russian king crabs have become very popular among Chinese consumers in recent years, and Hunchun City in Northeast China's Jilin Province has become an important hub for their supply to the Chinese market.

The city of Hunchun is located in the eastern part of Jilin Province, at the junction of the state borders of China, Russia and the DPRK.

Previously, king crabs imported from Russia to China had to be transported through the Republic of Korea and Japan, which led to higher costs and a deterioration in product quality.

After Hunchun Port was approved as a designated port for importing chilled seafood and edible aquatic animals in 2016, it opened an important channel for importing king crabs into China.

In the lead-up to the Spring Festival (Chunjie, the traditional Chinese New Year), the Hunchun port entered its busiest period. Trucks loaded with fresh king crabs entered the country one after another and, after efficiently clearing customs, were quickly dispatched to all corners of China.

To ensure the freshness of imported seafood, Hunchun Customs has opened a "green channel" to provide inspection and release services by appointment 24 hours a day, year-round, to speed up the customs clearance process.

More than 1.5 million live king crabs are imported into China through the Hunchun port annually, accounting for more than 70 percent of China's total import volume.

According to data, in 2025, Hunchun Customs controlled the import of 28,000 tons of live crabs and other aquatic food products, an increase of 13.4% compared with 2024, which contributed to the growth of local foreign trade and consumption.
