HAIKOU, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) — South China's Hainan Province welcomed more than 12.32 million tourists during the 2026 Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) holiday, up 28.9 percent year-on-year, official data showed.

Traveler spending reached 18.366 billion yuan (approximately US$2.65 billion), up 30.7 percent year-on-year, highlighting the steady growth in consumption during the recent holiday, which was the first since the introduction of the special customs regime across Hainan Island.

Duty-free sales reached RMB 2.72 billion, up 30.8 percent year-on-year, with 325,000 customers purchasing 1.997 million items.

Thanks to visa-free travel for citizens of 86 countries and simplified entry procedures, the total number of checkpoint crossings on Hainan exceeded 86,000, a 43.3 percent increase year-on-year. The main increase in inbound tourist traffic came from travelers from Russia, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Kazakhstan, and Singapore.

A senior official from the provincial tourism, culture and sports department assured that Hainan will continue to fully exploit the political advantages of the free trade port and local cultural and tourism resources, continuously optimize product offerings, improve service quality, and improve the regulatory system.
