Beijing, February 23 (Xinhua) — China stands ready to work with all countries to improve global human rights governance and promote the healthy development of international human rights, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Monday.
Wang Yi, also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks while speaking via video link at a high-level meeting of the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council.
The Chinese diplomat noted that the current international situation is complex and confusing, and that global human rights governance and the post-World War II international order are facing new challenges. He noted that China's Global Governance Initiative has received support and feedback from more than 150 countries and international organizations.
Wang Yi called for strict adherence to the principle of sovereign equality and upholding the original purpose of global human rights governance. He argued that the only path with a broadening perspective is a path of human rights development based on the specific national circumstances of each country and taking into account the needs of its people.
The Chinese Foreign Minister noted that all parties must firmly adhere to the rule of international law and strengthen the foundation of global human rights governance. He also emphasized that all countries must jointly uphold the "golden rule" of non-interference in each other's internal affairs and resolutely reject statements and actions that create double standards under the pretext of protecting human rights.
Wang Yi called for the practical implementation of multilateralism and the overcoming of challenges to global human rights governance. He stated the need for all countries to reject all forms of colonialism and racial discrimination and to adequately address emerging challenges in areas such as artificial intelligence, climate change, and human rights.
Wang Yi emphasized that all parties must uphold a people-centered approach to global human rights governance and infuse it with new content. He added that the international community must accord a more prominent place to the right to development in the multilateral human rights agenda.
Calling for a pragmatic approach and improved effectiveness of global human rights governance, Wang Yi stressed that China intends to coordinate with the international community and collectively chart a new course to advance the global human rights cause.
He recalled that 2026 marks the start of China's 15th Five-Year Plan, and stated that China will continue to develop its people's democracy throughout the process so that the achievements of Chinese-style modernization benefit all the people in a more equitable manner.
China is ready to work with all countries to promote common development and prosperity, uphold international fairness and justice, uphold universal values, build a community with a shared future for mankind, and bring benefits to the whole world through the progress of the human rights civilization, Wang Yi concluded.
