WASHINGTON, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) — The U.S. State Department on Monday ordered the evacuation of non-critical American staff from the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.

"The Department of State has ordered the evacuation of non-critical American personnel and their families from the U.S. Embassy in Beirut," the State Department said in a statement, without providing a reason.

“We continually evaluate the security situation and, based on our latest assessment, have deemed it prudent to reduce our presence to essential personnel,” the statement said.

The State Department emphasized that the evacuation is a temporary measure, while key embassy personnel continue their work on site.
