Tripoli, February 22 (Xinhua) — At least seven migrants died on a beach in the coastal town of Qasr al-Akhyar, east of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, local media reported on Saturday.
The bodies of migrants, including a woman and a child, were washed ashore by sea waves, according to social media reports citing a city police officer.
The number of people potentially missing remains unknown due to adverse sea conditions, the official said, adding that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the incident.
Libya is an important transit point for illegal migrants due to its geographical proximity to Europe and its long Mediterranean coastline. –0–
