Beijing, February 22 (Xinhua) — On Saturday, the first half of the Chunyun period, a special period for transport operations during the mass internal migration of Chinese people before, during, and after the Spring Festival (Chunjie, the traditional Chinese Lunar New Year), concluded. In the first 20 days, interregional passenger trips totaled 5.08 billion, the Ministry of Transport of China reported on Sunday.
In particular, the volume of passenger trips by road transport amounted to 4.76 billion person-times, by rail transport – 258 million person-times, by water transport – 19.99 million person-times, and by air transport – 47.52 million person-times.
According to previously published forecasts, the annual surge in passenger traffic, often described as the world's largest human migration, will result in a record volume of interregional passenger trips of 9.5 billion person-times over the 40-day period from February 2 to March 13 this year. –0–
