BEIJING, February 21 (Xinhua) — Daily interregional passenger travel during Chunyun, the special season for the country's transportation system during which mass internal migration occurs before, during, and after the Spring Festival, reached a new all-time high on February 20, exceeding 350 million passenger trips, according to data released by the Ministry of Transport on Saturday.
As the department noted, on February 20, the 19th day of the 2026 Chunyun period, interregional passenger traffic totaled 352.999 million trips. This figure is 12.3 percent higher than the same day in 2025 and sets a new record.
The Spring Festival, also known as Chunjie, the traditional Chinese New Year according to the lunar calendar, falls on February 17 this year, with the official holiday lasting nine days. The annual "chunyun" is often referred to as the world's largest seasonal population migration. A record 9.5 billion interregional passenger trips are expected in China during the 40-day period from February 2 to March 13.
