WASHINGTON, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) — Amid heightened tensions and a strengthened US military presence in the Middle East, US President Donald Trump said Thursday that the outcome of US-Iran nuclear talks will be decided within the next 10 days.

D. Trump made the corresponding statement while speaking at the first meeting of the “Peace Council” in Washington.

Local analysts believe the American leader hinted at the possibility of a US strike on Iran within the specified period.

“You’ll find out about that probably in the next 10 days,” said D. Trump, calling Iran “a hot spot right now.”

"We may have to take another step, or maybe not. Maybe we'll make a deal," he noted.

"It's been proven over the years that it's not easy to make a meaningful deal with Iran, and we must make a meaningful deal. Otherwise, bad things will happen," Trump added.

The White House said Wednesday that Tehran is expected to provide more details on its negotiating position in the coming weeks.

According to White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt, "diplomacy is always his [D. Trump's] first option." She also noted that "there are many reasons and arguments that can be made for a strike on Iran."

As reported on February 17 by the American news portal Axios, a Trump adviser estimated the likelihood of strikes in the coming weeks if negotiations fail at “90 percent,” adding that the US operation could be a large-scale campaign lasting several weeks. –0–
