The maximum number of utility workers, major Moscow engineering companies, and specialized equipment are deployed to deal with the aftermath of the unusual snowfall in the capital, according to the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Housing, Utilities, and Public Works. Petr Biryukov.
"The city is experiencing extremely challenging weather conditions today—heavy snowfall accompanied by winds gusting up to 15-17 meters per second. Forecasters estimate that more than 70 percent of the monthly precipitation will fall. The maximum number of municipal service personnel and specialists from major Moscow engineering companies are involved in clearing Moscow of snow. A fleet of municipal and engineering equipment has been deployed to the streets. Work is ongoing, and warming and food stations have been set up for the workers," noted Pyotr Biryukov.
All city services are working in an enhanced mode, constantly monitoring the condition of streets and major highways. As precipitation progresses, continuous mechanized sweeping of roadways and pedestrian areas is carried out on a cyclical basis, followed by de-icing.
Particular attention is being paid to the prompt clearing of key thoroughfares. This is necessary to ensure the passage of ambulances, emergency services, and public transportation. Specialists are also clearing sidewalks, approaches to bus stops, public transportation facilities, and social amenities.
In addition, a 24-hour duty of heads of enterprises and organizations has been organized in the capital urban economy complex, emergency dispatch services, emergency crews from engineering companies, and administrative district prefectures. Trucks and heavy-duty cranes are on duty along the Moscow Ring Road, as well as in the Troitsky and Novomoskovsky administrative districts. They are ready to assist truck drivers.
Once the snowfall subsides, utility services will begin clearing snow and ice from pitched roofs of apartment buildings, protruding building facades, gutters, and downspouts. The work areas will be cordoned off with tape and special barriers to prevent pedestrian access.
Residents are asked to be understanding about the inconvenience associated with snow removal and disposal, and to not interfere with the operation of municipal and utility equipment.
