LIMA, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) — Peru's Congress (parliament) on Tuesday approved seven motions to impeach President Jose Jeri, who must leave office immediately.
The proposals were adopted by 75 votes in favor, 24 against, and three abstentions.
Following the announcement of the results, Acting Congress President Fernando Rospigliosi declared the post of Congress President vacant.
He said lawmakers would convene in plenary session on Wednesday at 6:00 PM local time to elect a new head of Congress. The elected leader will assume the post of president.
J. Heri was sworn in as President of Peru on October 10, 2025, following the impeachment of former President Dina Boluarte by Congress.
According to the Peruvian Constitution, if the country's president is temporarily or permanently unable to perform his or her duties, his or her powers devolve upon the First Vice President. In the absence of the First Vice President, the Second Vice President assumes his or her duties. If both Vice Presidents are unable to perform their duties, the President of Congress assumes the presidential powers. If the inability to perform his or her duties is permanent, the President of Congress must immediately call elections.
