TOKYO, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) — Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi resigned along with her cabinet on Wednesday.

The entire Sanae Takaichi government resigned during a meeting that began shortly after 9:00 a.m. local time. A Diet session is scheduled for the afternoon to elect a new prime minister.

Following the vote, the new prime minister will finalise the appointment of cabinet members, and the cabinet secretary will announce its composition.

Sanae Takaichi, chairwoman of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, is expected to be reinstated as prime minister, given that her party currently holds more than two-thirds of the seats in the powerful lower house of parliament.

Since Sanae Takaichi's cabinet was appointed only a few months ago, in October, and the ruling coalition won the general election on February 8, changes in its composition are unlikely, local media report. -0-
