Tehran, February 18 /Xinhua/ — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that his country will not abandon its "peaceful" nuclear technology, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Tuesday.
He made the statement at a meeting with three civil society activists, noting Iran's readiness to prove the peaceful nature of its nuclear program.
Iran has repeatedly stated that it does not seek to develop nuclear weapons, based on its stated policy and the religious edict issued by the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Pezeshkian said, adding that the country is prepared for any verification in this regard.
He stressed, however, that the country would not accept being denied the use of nuclear science and technology to treat patients and develop industry and agriculture.
His statement comes amid rising tensions between Tehran and Washington and a build-up of US military power in West Asia.
Iran and the United States concluded the second round of proximity nuclear talks in Geneva on Tuesday. The talks were held at the Omani Embassy and were facilitated by Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi. The first round of proximity talks took place in the Omani capital, Muscat, on February 6.
