BEIJING, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) — China's Ministry of Commerce on Thursday expressed regret over the EU's decision to request the establishment of a WTO dispute settlement panel in response to China's court rulings on standard essential patents.

China will handle this request properly in accordance with WTO dispute settlement procedures and resolutely protect its legitimate rights and interests, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce's Department of Contracts and Law said in response to a media question.

On February 12, Geneva time, the EU announced that it would request the WTO to establish a panel in connection with its dispute with China over a Chinese court decision concerning a lawsuit on licensing standard essential patents.

A representative of the above-mentioned department of the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China emphasized that China has always attached great importance to the protection of intellectual property rights.

In strict compliance with WTO rules and its obligations to join this organization, China is constantly improving its legislation and law enforcement practices in the field of intellectual property, achieving results that are obvious to everyone, he noted. -0-
