ISTANBUL, February 12 (Xinhua) — At least three migrants died when a rubber dinghy carrying 45 migrants partially sank in the Aegean Sea on Thursday, the Turkish Coast Guard said in a statement.
According to the statement, the incident occurred at approximately 5:33 a.m. local time (2:33 a.m. GMT) off the coast of Izmir Province in western Turkey. Helicopters and patrol vessels were quickly dispatched to the disaster area.
It is noted that rescue teams arriving at the scene discovered a partially sunken boat and numerous migrants in the water.
According to available data, 38 migrants of those on board have been rescued so far, and the search for four more continues.
The Aegean Sea is one of the main routes for migrants attempting to reach Europe via Turkey. According to Turkish authorities, the country currently hosts approximately 4 million migrants, including Syrians under temporary protection.
