Dhaka, February 12 (Xinhua) — Voting in Bangladesh's parliamentary elections officially concluded at 4:30 p.m. local time on Thursday. The Election Commission of Bangladesh said the vote counting will begin immediately after the polls conclude.
According to local media, despite isolated incidents, the voting overall proceeded smoothly and peacefully.
It began at 7:30 AM at more than 42,000 polling stations. According to the electoral commission, a total of 2,028 candidates are vying for 299 of the 300 majoritarian seats. The election for the remaining seat will be held later due to the death of one candidate.
The country held its first general elections since Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister in August 2024 amid nationwide political chaos.
In Bangladesh, a party can only form a government if it wins at least 151 seats. –0–
