BEIJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) — More than 1.4 billion interregional trips were made in China in the first week of the Chunyun (Spring Festival) passenger travel peak, the Ministry of Transport said Monday.
According to the agency, from February 2 to 8, the number of automobile trips by residents of the country exceeded 1.3 billion, the volume of passenger transportation by rail, water and air transport exceeded 86 million, 4.9 million and 16 million person-times, respectively.
On Sunday, the seventh day of the 2026 Chunyun period, interregional passenger traffic across the country totaled 227.71 million trips, up 2.3 percent from the same period last year.
This year, the Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year, falls on February 17, with a nine-day holiday. The annual "chunyun" is often called the world's largest seasonal human migration. A record 9.5 billion interregional passenger trips are expected to be made in the country during the 40-day period from February 2 to March 13. -0-
