Washington, February 9 (Xinhua) — U.S. military forces pursued a Venezuela-linked oil tanker sailing from the Caribbean and boarded it overnight in the Indian Ocean, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on Monday.
“Overnight, US forces exercised their right to search, intercept, and board the Aquila II without incident,” P. Hegseth wrote on the social network X.
"The ship tried to escape, and we followed it," the minister added, accusing the tanker of violating the U.S. quarantine for sanctioned ships traveling to or from Venezuela.
According to media reports, the tanker Aquila II, carrying about 700,000 barrels of Venezuelan heavy crude, left Venezuelan territorial waters in early January.
"The War Department has been tracking and pursuing this vessel from the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean… You will run out of fuel long before you manage to escape us," wrote P. Hegseth.
