Paris, February 8 (Xinhua) — Former French Culture Minister Jack Lang has offered to resign as head of the Paris-based Arab World Institute amid an investigation into his ties to financier Jeffrey Epstein, French radio station Franceinfo reported on Saturday.
On Saturday, J. Lang sent a letter to French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, in which he proposed resigning at the next extraordinary meeting of the institute's board of directors in order to "defend the institute" in the face of "personal attacks," Franceinfo reports.
Jean-Néphen Barrot "took note" of this proposal, launching the process of appointing a successor to J. Lang, the radio station reported, citing a source in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The scandal erupted after the US Department of Justice released more than 3 million additional pages of documents related to the late financier James Epstein on January 30. The documents indicate that Epstein maintained correspondence and financial ties with Jean Lang and his daughter Caroline Lang, sparking criticism in French political circles.
On Saturday, J. Lang wrote on social media that the accusations against him were “baseless.”
France's National Financial Prosecutor's Office on Friday opened a preliminary investigation against J. Lang and his daughter on suspicion of aggravated tax fraud and money laundering.
