TEHRAN, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday called the recent nuclear talks between his country and the United States "a step forward."

He made the comment on the social media platform X, referring to indirect talks between Iranian and US delegations in the Omani capital Muscat on Friday.

M. Pezeshkian noted that the discussions took place as a result of the efforts of “friendly” governments in the West Asian region, emphasizing that dialogue has always been Iran’s chosen strategy for the peaceful resolution of problems.

Meanwhile, speaking at a national conference in the Iranian capital Tehran, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who led the country's delegation at Friday's talks, said: "No one has the right to tell us what we should have and what we should not have."

He assured that Iran does not intend to develop nuclear weapons and rejects any form of intimidation.

He said, "If they speak to the Iranian people in the language of force, we will respond in kind. However, if they speak to us in the language of respect, we will respond in the same language."

The talks come amid heightened regional tensions between Washington and Tehran, including the recent buildup of US military presence in the Middle East and increased Iranian preparations.

After the negotiations concluded, A. Araghchi noted: "Overall, I can say that this was a good start. However, the continuation of the process depends on consultations between both sides in their capitals and their decisions on how to continue it." –0–
