Moscow, February 6 (Xinhua) — The expiration of the New START Treaty has created a vacuum. Russia is prepared for any scenario. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov following talks with the current Chairman of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis, and the organization's Secretary General, Feridun Sinirlioglu.

"As you know, the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty expired yesterday, leaving a vacuum. Our position is set out in detail in a special statement our ministry issued, and we will proceed from the premise that, in principle, Russia is prepared for any development," said Sergey Lavrov.

The Russian side, he said, advocates for dialogue on strategic stability and will await information on the US's readiness for this.

“We, of course, prefer dialogue and will wait to see how ready the United States is for the same,” the Russian Foreign Minister said.

The New START Treaty expired on February 5. It was the last international legal instrument limiting the deployment of nuclear weapons.
