Washington, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday called for replacing the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) between Russia and the United States with a "modernized" agreement.
“We should put our nuclear experts to work on a new, improved, and modernized treaty that can last for a long time,” Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned on Wednesday that the expiration of the New START treaty marks a "grave moment" for international peace and security.
The New START Treaty was signed by Russia and the United States in 2010 and entered into force on February 5, 2011, with an initial term of 10 years. It obligated the parties to reduce the number of deployed nuclear warheads and their delivery systems. The document was subsequently extended until February 4, 2026. –0–
