BEIJING, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) — China began collecting public opinion on state standards for semi-finished culinary products on Friday.
Several agencies, including the State Administration for Market Regulation of China and the National Health Commission of China, have published three draft documents affecting industrially prepared convenience foods.
Convenience foods are portioned food products that require heating or cooking before consumption. They are produced from one or more edible agricultural products and their derivatives through pre-processing. They may contain seasonings, but must not contain preservatives and may be sold with or without individual seasoning packets, according to the draft documents.
The draft documents exclude staple foods such as frozen dumplings and buns, freshly cut vegetables, and ready-to-eat foods from the definition of convenience foods.
The shelf life of semi-finished products should not exceed 12 months.
In addition, the draft documents encourage food service providers to inform consumers about their food handling practices. -0-
