Recently, the Kunming Forestry and Grassland Administration, Yunnan Province, Yunnan University, the Kunming Ornithological Association, and the Kunming Dianchi Lake Research Institute jointly conducted the 41st synchronized census of red-legged gulls wintering in Kunming. According to the results, their population in 2025 reached 42,000 individuals, slightly exceeding the 2024 figure.

According to Zhang Zhizhong, an engineer at the Kunming Dianchi Lake Research Institute, monitoring was previously largely manual and required a full day of work by several bird identification specialists. Currently, a number of districts have implemented an intelligent monitoring system using "bird face recognition" technology, which allows for the completion of the count in just a few hours with an accuracy of up to 90 percent, as well as simultaneously recording data on bird behavior, including feeding and resting.

Since 1985, red-legged gulls have been wintering in Kunming for 41 consecutive years. Flocks of gulls gracefully circle the sky at the Haigeng Dam of Dianchi Lake and in Cuihu Park, and their harmonious coexistence with the city's residents has become one of the striking attractions of Kunming's "spring city."
