Moscow, February 5 (Xinhua) — In response to the expulsion of an employee of its embassy in Berlin, Russia declared a diplomatic employee of the German Embassy in Moscow persona non grata. This was announced by the Russian Foreign Ministry.
"The head of the German diplomatic mission was handed a note declaring the diplomatic employee of the German Embassy in Moscow persona non grata as a symmetrical response to the aforementioned decision by the German government, which bears full responsibility for the new escalation in bilateral relations," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its official website.
On January 22, the Russian Embassy in Germany confirmed that the head of the Russian diplomatic mission, Sergei Nechayev, had been summoned to the German Foreign Ministry in connection with the detention of a woman suspected of spying for the Russian Federation. They reported that the Russian diplomat "was issued a protest regarding the detention the previous day by German law enforcement agencies of a German-Ukrainian citizen suspected of spying for the Russian Federation, and was informed that the embassy employee, who allegedly served as her handler, had been declared persona non grata." The embassy pointed out the absurdity of the claims and emphasized that Berlin's unfriendly actions will not go unanswered.
