Moscow, February 5 (Xinhua) – Russia will maintain its responsible approach to nuclear weapons after the expiration of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), but will be guided by its national interests. This was stated by Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov on Thursday.

"In any case, the Russian Federation maintains its responsible and attentive approach to the issue of strategic stability in the area of nuclear weapons and, of course, will, as always, be guided primarily by its national interests," TASS quotes him as saying.

As D. Peskov noted, the New START Treaty will expire on February 5. He added that Russian President Vladimir Putin's initiative to maintain strategic arms restrictions for a year after the New START Treaty expires has not received a response from the United States. "Our initiative to maintain the ceilings on strategic arms for another year, even after the New START Treaty expires, has also remained unanswered," the Kremlin spokesman stated.

D. Peskov added that Russia views the expiration of the New START Treaty negatively. "The treaty is ending, we view this negatively, and we express regret in this regard," he emphasized.
