Lanzhou, February 5 (Xinhua) — The reconstruction and modernization of the Bishkek platform of the China-Kyrgyzstan Joint Laboratory for the Protection of Cultural Heritage under the Belt and Road Initiative was recently completed, according to the Dunhuang Academy, located in the city of the same name in Gansu Province (Northwest China).

After completion of the reconstruction, it became a comprehensive experimental platform for the study of the ruins of the ancient settlement of Ak-Beshim /Suyab/ with functions such as rapid diagnostics, geodetic and cartographic research, analysis of basic physical properties, testing of the performance characteristics of materials, remote monitoring and early warning.

This laboratory was established in 2025 by the Dunhuang Academy and the Republican Inspectorate for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments of the Ministry of Culture, Information, and Youth Policy of Kyrgyzstan. Following the completion of the reconstruction and modernization, the number of specialized equipment units on the Bishkek platform increased to 56 units (sets), enabling it to conduct research, implement key technologies, and train highly qualified specialists, thereby laying the foundation for further regular and high-quality cooperation between the two countries in the field of cultural heritage protection.

The two sides plan to steadily advance work in many areas, such as joint archaeological exploration, solving complex problems of mastering key technologies, developing concepts and guidelines for cultural heritage protection, engineering practice and demonstration, personnel training, and academic exchanges, over the next two years, so as to systematically improve the scientific and technological level of cultural heritage protection in China and Kyrgyzstan, and build bridges for international cooperation in cultural heritage protection.

The ruins of Ak-Beshim are located in Kyrgyzstan and are part of the Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor, a UNESCO World Heritage site jointly submitted by China, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.

The Dunhuang Academy is a cultural relics conservation institution with a history of over 80 years. Its concepts and technologies for the protection of frescoes and rammed-earth ruins are among the most advanced in the world.
