URUMQI, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) — According to statistics from the Horgos Port of Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, 131,000 people entered and exited the port in January 2026, up 34 percent year-on-year.
Judging by the passenger flow structure over the past month, the share of passengers traveling for business or foreign trade negotiations has steadily increased, becoming the main driver of overall passenger flow growth. Furthermore, a significant increase was recorded in the number of passengers traveling by road or on tourist trips in border areas. Due to the surge in winter tourism, many Chinese and foreign citizens are taking cross-border tourist trips, preferring to cross the border through the Khorgos border crossing.
A tourist surnamed Wang from Henan Province (central China) told Xinhua at the Khorgos checkpoint that this time she plans to travel to Kazakhstan to visit such landmarks as the Independence Monument and the Abai Opera and Ballet Theater, sample local delicacies, and learn about the country's traditions and customs.
"The main goal of my current trip to Kazakhstan is to explore the local markets for metal structures, modular homes, and elevators," said Chinese businessman Wang Deyu, adding that customs clearance is now quick and efficient, allowing him to travel to Kazakhstan in the morning and return in the evening.
Currently, nine China-Kazakhstan international passenger bus routes are open at the Khorgos checkpoint. In 2025, a total of 1.681 million people entered and exited this border crossing, a 22.8 percent increase compared to the previous year. -0-
