Washington, February 4 (Xinhua) — US President Donald Trump and Colombian President Gustavo Petro held closed-door two-hour talks at the White House on Tuesday. Both leaders described the talks as friendly, signaling a warming of relations after months of tension between the two countries.
"We had a very good meeting," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. "I thought he was great."
At a press conference at the Colombian Embassy in Washington, G. Petro stated that the meeting discussed cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking and ways to support economic and energy projects related to Venezuela.
According to him, the meeting was positive.
According to reports, the Colombian president invited Donald Trump to visit the Caribbean city of Cartagena and asked the United States to mediate in resolving the trade dispute between Colombia and Ecuador.
The meeting between the two leaders came after several months of strained relations. Trump publicly accused Petro of failing to control drug trafficking and threatened punitive measures, including higher tariffs and a reduction in U.S. aid.
In turn, G. Petro accused the United States of using anti-drug policy as a pretext to justify the use of force in the Caribbean region. His U.S. visa was revoked in September 2025 after attending a pro-Palestinian rally in New York, where he called on the American military to disobey D. Trump's orders.
Analysts say while the talks indicate a possible warming of personal ties between the two leaders, deep differences over security, drug policy and regional military action remain unresolved.
