Kabul, February 4 (Xinhua) — Afghan authorities have begun construction on a large-scale infrastructure project aimed at widening and reconstructing a key road in Kandahar City, the capital of Kandahar Province in the south of the country. This was announced in a statement by the provincial government on Wednesday.

The project, which has a total investment of 1.4 billion Afghanis (over US$21.5 million), includes the widening and comprehensive reconstruction of the road, which is considered one of the most significant urban development initiatives in recent years, according to the statement.

According to the plan, the road will be reconstructed in accordance with modern standards, becoming 60 meters wide and 9.5 kilometers long. According to the approved schedule, construction work is expected to be completed within six months, the statement said.

Residents welcomed the project, noting that improved infrastructure will help relieve traffic congestion, improve the quality of transportation services, and contribute to economic growth in Kandahar. –0–
