Oslo, February 3 (Xinhua) — Despite the resumption of diplomatic talks with the US government, Washington's desire to acquire Greenland remains, Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated in an interview with Danish broadcaster DR aired on Tuesday.

J.-F. Nielsen reported that communication with Washington had been restored through diplomatic channels. "Now we can stop throwing mud at each other through the press," he noted.

The Prime Minister added that the joint working group had already held its first meeting, but declined to disclose details.

Emphasizing that the discussions have only just begun, J.-F. Nielsen indicated that it is too early to say how close the parties are to reaching an agreement. He stated that each side will first present its proposals, after which a search for common ground will begin.

The Prime Minister stated that the issue of sovereignty remains a non-negotiable red line. He added that Greenland is open to cooperation with the United States in the areas of security and defense within the framework of the existing defense agreement, but the scope of such cooperation will depend on the specific intentions of the American side.

Since returning to the White House in 2025, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated his desire to "acquire" Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. The American president's plans have sparked strong resistance in Europe.
