Beijing, February 3 (Xinhua) — China hopes the United States will respond positively to Russia's constructive proposal for further agreements on the New START Treaty and sincerely support global strategic stability, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Tuesday.
The New START Treaty, signed by Russia and the United States in 2010, expires on February 5, 2026. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated in September 2025 that Russia would continue to comply with the treaty's key restrictions for one year after its expiration, provided that the United States refrained from actions that undermine the existing strategic balance.
China's position on the trilateral nuclear disarmament talks involving China, the United States, and Russia is clear, Lin Jian said at a regular press conference, responding to a question about the American side's expression of interest in China's participation in the talks.
He added that the scale of China's and the United States' nuclear potentials are incomparable, and at this stage, the demand for China's participation in nuclear disarmament negotiations is unfair and unreasonable. -0-
