Cynologists from the Russian School for Guide Dogs of the All-Russian Society of the Blind will conduct training for another 60 four-legged assistants.
Under the guidance of experienced instructors, the dogs will practice key skills, such as passing through turnstiles, navigating escalators, and retrieving dropped objects. Acclimation to high noise levels and large crowds will be an important part of their training. Through these activities, the dogs learn to remain calm and confidently navigate the metro.
The best breeds for this role are Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and East European Shepherds.
"Following Sergei Sobyanin's instructions, we continue to actively develop a barrier-free environment on public transport. Training guide dogs in the metro is an important part of this work. Over 400 animals have been trained here over the past 12 years, and another 60 will learn these skills this year. It's important to us that every passenger can travel safely and comfortably," said the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.
Cynologists from the Russian Guide Dog Training School of the All-Russian Society of the Blind practice skills with puppies, teaching them not to be startled by loud noises and to obey commands despite external stimuli. Not every puppy that completes the general training course passes the final exams.
Those who demonstrate the best results are admitted to the next stage at six months of age: subway training. Under the supervision of inspectors from the Passenger Mobility Center, the dogs master the skills necessary to accompany their owners at subway stations.
