BEIJING, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) — A total of 187.91 million interregional passenger trips were made on Monday, the first day of Chunyun 2026, the country's special transportation season for the mass internal migration of Chinese people before, during and after the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year), up 13 percent from the first day of Chunyun 2025, transportation authorities said.
In particular, during the reporting period, the volume of passenger transportation by road and rail reached 173.12 million and 12 million person-times, with both figures representing a 13 percent and 15.5 percent increase year-on-year, respectively.
The number of passenger trips on water transport totaled approximately 600,000, an increase of 12.7 percent year-on-year. Passenger traffic in the civil aviation sector totaled 2.19 million, a 5.3 percent increase over the same period in 2025.
As a reminder, since the Spring Festival is the most important traditional holiday in China, every year during the 40-day Chunyun season, hundreds of millions of people who work, study, or live far from their hometowns return home for a family reunion to celebrate Spring Festival and then return.
