Tehran, January 31 (Xinhua) — At least one person was killed and 14 others were injured on Saturday afternoon in an explosion at an eight-story residential building in the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, the semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim reported.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:10 p.m. local time (10:40 a.m. GMT), after which rescuers were immediately dispatched to the scene, the agency reported, citing Mokhtar Salahshur, head of the provincial branch of the Red Crescent Society.
He added that the causes of the incident have not yet been established.
In a comment to Iran's semi-official Fars news agency, Hormozgan Provincial Emergency Management Directorate head Mehrdad Hassanzadeh said firefighters and rescuers were at the scene and were investigating the cause and extent of the incident.
According to the Fars news agency, the explosion severely damaged the first through third floors of the building, shattering windows on all other floors, as well as in nearby buildings. More than 10 cars parked near the building were also damaged.
