WASHINGTON, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) — The Trump administration on Friday announced new sanctions against several Iranian officials, including Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, amid unrest in the country.
The US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control said in a statement that Momeni oversees Iranian law enforcement agencies that were involved in the violence against protesters.
Protests that began in late December due to economic hardship have escalated into more serious problems for Iran, reportedly resulting in numerous casualties. Tehran has blamed the United States and Israel for the unrest.
