Beijing, January 29 (Xinhua) — China will develop new productive capacities in the water sector nationwide, focusing on the expanded application of advanced technologies and equipment to improve reservoir management, the Ministry of Water Resources announced on Thursday.
As Zhang Wenjie, head of the ministry's Operations Management Department, noted, the country will establish an all-weather intelligent monitoring system covering space, air, land, water, and engineering structures. It will comprehensively utilize such tools as remote sensing satellites, ground-penetrating radars, unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned vessels, and underwater robots to enhance its capacity to detect hidden hazards and conduct intelligent inspections.
Zhang Wenjie cited an example of the successful application of new technologies last year. During the autumn flood of 2025 on the Hanjiang River, the engineering safety of the Danjiangkou Reservoir in Hubei Province (Central China) was monitored in real time using a global navigation satellite system and measuring robots. This technical support ensured precise and scientifically sound regulation of the reservoir's operations.
According to Wang Bao'en, Vice Minister of Water Resources, the ministry is currently focusing on the development of safe, environmentally friendly, and "smart" dams. It will intensify research, development, and implementation of new technologies and equipment, and will select a batch of representative dams with favorable basic conditions to launch a pilot project for the construction of dams of the three aforementioned types and significantly improve the level of modernized reservoir management.
