Beijing, January 29 (Xinhua) — The People's Liberation Army Navy and the China Coast Guard will safeguard national sovereignty and maintain peace in the South China Sea (SCS), Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Jiang Bin said Thursday.

"We will continue to strictly fulfill our duty and mission to protect the seas and borders, and put into practice the concept of a maritime community with a shared future," Jiang Bin said at a press conference in response to a question on the matter.

A Chinese defense ministry spokesman recalled that on January 22, the Chinese Navy and the Chinese People's Liberation Army rescued 17 crew members from a Philippine vessel that sank in the South China Sea near China's Huangyan Island, and handed them over to the Philippine side on January 25.

However, as Jiang Bin noted, the Philippine Coast Guard spokesman, contrary to all expectations, used this humanitarian act to whip up propaganda, which was a despicable and dishonest act.

"The Chinese Navy and the BOC will make an even greater contribution to turning the South China Sea into a sea of peace, friendship, and cooperation," assured the official representative of the PRC Ministry of Defense.
