Moscow, January 29 (Xinhua) — There is no risk to Russia from the spread of the Nipah virus, the TASS news agency reported on Thursday, citing Anna Popova, head of the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor).
"There are currently no risks to the Russian Federation from the Nipah virus or the situation unfolding in India. It's important to note that two cases of the disease have been officially registered in India to date," A. Popova noted, adding that all those with whom these cases came into contact are being monitored.
According to Rospotrebnadzor specialist Natalia Pshenichnaya, the Nipah virus is characterized by a severe and rapidly progressive course, significantly reducing the likelihood of its importation into Russia. "The patient won't even make it to the airport," she said, noting that there are no animals in Russia that carry the virus.
She recalled that the Russian Federation has a "Perimeter" system in place at the border, which allows for the identification of those arriving with signs of infectious diseases.
An outbreak of the Nipah virus has been reported in India. This infection is spread by certain species of bats. Humans become infected through contact with them and by consuming date palm sap or fruit contaminated with the excreta of infected animals.
