Tehran, January 27 (Xinhua) — Recent unrest in Iran was aimed at drawing the United States into a new war against the Islamic Republic, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated during a phone call with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijit Herath on Monday.
He said "peaceful protests" earlier this month had escalated into violent actions of an "organized and terrorist nature" that were "aimed at drawing the United States into a new war against Iran."
A. Araghchi said he appreciated the Sri Lankan government's support for Iran in response to the UN Human Rights Council's resolution against Tehran adopted on Friday, calling it a sign of Sri Lanka's "independent, balanced and friendly" approach to Iran.
V. Herath said Sri Lanka will continue to strive to strengthen relations with Iran despite interference from other countries.
