Beijing, January 27 (Xinhua) — At the invitation of Chinese State Council Premier Li Qiang, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will pay an official visit to China from January 28 to 31. This was announced by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun at a regular ministry press conference on Tuesday.
Guo Jiakun noted that in August 2024, Chinese President Xi Jinping held a telephone conversation with K. Starmer, and in November of the same year, on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Xi Jinping met with K. Starmer, which put Sino-British relations on the path of improvement and development.
According to Guo Jiakun, maintaining communication and strengthening cooperation between China and the UK, both permanent members of the UN Security Council, serves the common interests of their peoples and promotes world peace, stability and development.
During Starmer's visit, which will be the first by a British Prime Minister to China in eight years, Xi Jinping will meet with him, Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China Li Qiang will hold talks with him, and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Zhao Leji will also meet with Starmer, Guo Jiakun said, adding that the two sides will conduct an in-depth exchange of views on bilateral relations and issues of mutual interest.
In addition to Beijing, K. Starmer will also visit Shanghai.
Guo Jiakun pointed out that since the British Labour government came to power, it has made it clear that it is willing to develop consistent, long-term and strategic relations with China and actively promote dialogue and cooperation between the two countries.
China is willing to take this visit as an opportunity to strengthen political mutual trust with the UK, deepen practical cooperation, jointly open a new chapter of healthy and stable development of bilateral relations, and work together for global peace, security and stability, Guo Jiakun emphasized. -0-
